Save the date: The 2018 MLK Day of Service will be held on Saturday January 13, 2018.
Students, faculty, staff, and their partners and children are all invited to participate in OSU’s largest day of service of the year. Projects will take place at various times with all projects starting in the morning. A light breakfast, snacks, and hot lunch will be provided to volunteers by Global Community Kitchen. Check in will be located in the MU Horizon Room 49, and transportation to all projects will be provided.
The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is about coming together to honor Dr. King's life and legacy and help further his dream for peace by serving our neighbors and strengthening our communities. MLK Day is a perfect opportunity for us to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, builds bridges, breaks down barriers, addresses social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of strong, beloved communities.
Summary of the 2017 projects:
Below are just a few sentiments from Dr. King demonstrating his call for us to work for civil rights, social justice, and to serve and be in community with one another.
“We are faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”
“The time is always right to do what is right.”
"Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
"Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."
“Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.”
“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
“Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.”
The OSU Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is a campus-wide, week-long celebration with multiple events and hosts. The CCE's Service day is just one of these opportunities to experience. For more information about other events taking place on campus, visit the celebration Facebook page here.
