Our Mission & Vision
To support and promote a creative outlet of expression and an enriched experiential learning experience where students and the other members of the University community can foster their own creativity.
The Craft Center provides opportunities for OSU Students to engage their hearts and minds in the pursuit of self-discovery and self-expression. We provide tools that will enhance their ability to navigate and make contributions in the real world. We recognize the importance of fostering an environment that supports people's pathway toward achieving meaningful and fulfilling lives through discovery of what is important to them and the enhancement of their experiences.
With well-equipped studios and an extensive series of workshops and classes in the handcrafted/visual arts, the Craft Center complements and augments the educational opportunities available at Oregon State University.
- Experiential Learning: We will create enriching hands-on learning opportunities
- Wellness: We will provide an environment and activities that foster the well-being of students
- Leadership: We will create opportunities for students to learn, lead and teach others
- Community: We will provide an engaging, welcoming and inclusive environment where creative thinkers can find community
Engage Your Creativity
The OSU Craft Center offers well equipped studios and classes in the following areas: Ceramics, Glass, Woodworking, Fibers, Pen & Paper and Jewelry/Metals. Membership is open to OSU students, faculty, staff and the general public. All levels are welcome from beginner to advanced. Classes are taught by skilled artists & craft persons, with an emphasis on quality small group instruction and individual attention. Come learn, explore and create in a warm and friendly environment!
The Craft Center began in the spring of 1966, with a handful of students in a small basement room off the MU Ballroom and the purpose of offering student, faculty and spouses the opportunity to make productive and creative use of their leisure time. Jewelry, lapidary, wood carving and weaving were popular crafts at this time. The Craft Centers popularity prompted an expansion and move to a new location in the MU East/Snell Hall in 1977; increasing it square footage to 4,600 square feet of space. Many new programs were offered; most popular was the addition of ceramics and photography. Yet another expansion occurred in 1996, occupying what had been The Gallery, a former eatery, into what we refer to as our South Classroom, bringing its overall size to over 11,000 sq. feet and allowing for additional programs and classes to be offered.
In March of 2015, the Craft Center relocated into a brand new facility in the basement level of the Student Experience Center occupying approx. 10,000 square feet of artist studio space. Programs and classes are offered in: ceramics, digital photography, textiles (weaving, sewing and spinning), silk screening and printmaking, glass torchwork, fused glass and stained glass, jewelry and metal work, fine woodworking, paper arts and more. We are open 7 days a week, offering over 2,500 hours of formal classes and workshops per year. In addition, the Craft Center offers 57 hours open studio time per week to its members. The Craft Center serves students, faculty /staff and the general public.
