Name: Nina Nguyen
Major: Public Health
Year: Graduating Senior
Reflecting upon her time at Oregon State during her senior year, Nina Nguyen says that campus leadership opportunities have provided her with a support system of great friends who have kept her motivated throughout college. Nina has been heavily involved on the Oregon State campus. She was Feel Good OSU’s Dance Against Hunger manager, Judicial Chair of the Unified Greek Council as well as Recruitment Chair, Fundraising Chair and now President of Delta Phi Omega sorority. Currently, Nina is the Executive Chief of Staff for ASOSU. Her next step is earning her Master’s in Public Affairs with an International focus serving the Peace Corps in the Philippines.
Nina believes a leader must first be a listener. When making decisions you must consider the concerns and opinions of those around you. You must also support and nurture others to empower them to become leaders by encouraging people to use their strengths. In Nina’s opinion one of the biggest challenges facing student leaders is avoiding burnout. Her advice to student leaders it to mentor and encourage students, take a step back to allow them to become leaders; which will help you strengthen your organization with new leadership.
Nina is also well-prepared for life after graduation because she has always treated her positions within campus organizations as real jobs. As she develops in her leadership positions she is gaining professional skills and lessons which will apply to her future career. She thinks students are more prepared than they think because they are already balancing so many things. Nina encourages learning and growing from every experience, “Reflect on how you already did something and figure out how to do it better next time.”
