Sarah is currently in her 5th year at Oregon State University working as an Event Specialist for the Student Events and Activities Center. Sarah’s current major project is working as the Program Coordinator for OSU’s Healthy Campus Initiative. The project will be partnering with the Nutrition and Dietetics Campaign as well as Student Dining Services. Sarah’s mission is to help foster healthy environments for students and to connect them with resources. She’s delighted of how supportive the University is to help deliver a message centered on health and wellness.
Sarah’s first leadership opportunity in college came when she joined her sorority, Kappa Delta, and met with its Vice President of Standards who reached out to her. Sarah mentions that she was inspired about how genuine their interaction was. She loved that it felt as though this person was investing time into her and made her feel confident. Sarah applied for an open position of Community Service Chair and from there her pathway to involvement skyrocketed. Sarah’s joined multiple student groups because she loves the feeling of connection it gives her to her community.
Sarah believes leaders should be caring and be able to put others needs first. She has been apart of the Blood Drive Association and has served multiple positions. She eventually became president of the organization and was invited to be apart of the Board of Directors for the Pacific Northwest chapter of the American Red Cross. She notes it was an amazing opportunity to reach out locally and nationally. She has also worked with the Polar Plunge for 5 years, which raises money for the Special Olympics. Sarah has also created a new student group known as ‘Beaver Dam’ that which helps support student athletes.
She believes that when it comes to leadership that “you should lead by example and that your actions must support the words that you say”. She stresses that the most important part of leadership are the people that you work for and care about and that we should try our best to inspire others as we ourselves have been.
