Within SLI, the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) creates space for students to craft and progress their collective visions of social, economic, and environmental justice by facilitating community-engaged learning experiences. In partnership with community-based organizations, CCE provides direct service, advocacy, philanthropy, and other community engagement opportunities that allow students to work towards a more just, sustainable world. CCE builds community capacity, enhances students' leadership skills, and inspires positive change through connecting students’ interests and talents with community needs.
We are looking to hire and fill student staff positions for 2018–2019 academic year. The CCE student staff work closely with the Civic Engagement Graduate Assistant and three full time staff supervisors to offer meaningful community engagement and service opportunities to the campus community. Our student staff positions focus on the following responsibilities: community partnership development, event and service project coordination, campus collaboration and student organization support, leading student service projects, and media and communications. The CCE is looking for passionate, responsible, open-minded, and self-motivated students who want to enrich the diverse campus community.
Pay starts at $11.05/hour.
Available positions are:
Community Partnership Specialist
Community Partnership Specialists build and strengthen community by fostering mutually beneficial relationships with local nonprofit organizations to identify community needs in the areas of direct service, philanthropy, and advocacy. They collaborate with community partners and Event Specialists to plan civic engagement opportunities for students.
The Eco-Reps Specialist assists with managing and mentoring the Eco-Reps program. Oregon State University’s Eco-Representatives (Eco-Reps) is a cohort-based student leadership development program that advances a culture of sustainability in OSU residence halls.
Event Specialists advance community-engaged learning and leadership and strengthen communities through planning and managing civic engagement events and service days that meet community-identified needs or explore community issues.
Growing Food Security Specialist
The Growing Food Security Specialist creates a more equitable campus food system through managing the Growing Food Security educational garden and other basic needs security programs. Growing Food Security is a partnership between the Center for Civic Engagement and the Human Services Resource Center (HSRC) that aims to give students the resources that they need to be successful at Oregon State University.
Media Specialists inspire and celebrate civic engagement through managing the CCE newsletter, social media, website, event photography, and graphic design orders. Media Specialists work with Outreach Specialists as part of the Communication team to tell the CCE's story to the campus and local community.
Outreach Specialists elevate CCE’s campus presence through developing and facilitating trainings and workshops, tabling, and recognition program development and management. Outreach Specialists work with Media Specialists as part of the Communication team to tell the CCE's story to the campus and local community.
Waste Watchers Specialist
The Waste Watchers Specialist coordinates educational events and leads a volunteer team that fosters student engagement in challenging consumer norms, reducing consumption, reusing/repurposing material goods, and recycling in collaboration with Campus Recycling. Waste Watchers is a joint group between Campus Recycling and the Student Sustainability Initiative whose mission is to engage students and the community in waste reduction at OSU by providing educational programming, meaningful opportunities for action, and empowerment of future leaders.

- Describe why you care about civic engagement, sustainability, and/or social justice and why it’s important to engage in this type of work.
- Describe an experience you have had with a culture, belief, or lived experience different from your own that you believe influenced or impacted your perspective.
