Selections are based upon the timeliness and quality of the applications and personal statements and crafting Alternative Break teams representing diversity in experience and perspectives.

Need-based financial assistance is available! If you would like to apply for a travel grant, please review information about the Alternative Break Travel Grant Program administered through the Human Services Resource Center (HSRC). All travel grant applications must be submitted at the time of the trip application. Travel grants cannot be accepted past March 1, 2018.

Participant Eligibility:

  • Must be a currently enrolled OSU student
  • Must be paying student fees at the Corvallis campus
  • Must be in good university standing (academic and student conduct)

What term and year is your anticipated graduation?
PERSONAL STATEMENTS: Please thoughtfully respond to each of the following questions in 2-3 double spaced pages and upload your personal statements. Trip placements will be heavily dependent upon your personal statements. Please save your file as "Last Name_First Name AB Application 2018." 1.) Briefly tell us why you would like to participate in an Alternative Break trip. Also, comment on what you hope to gain (skills, competencies, knowledge, etc.) as a result of the experience. 2.) Describe your previous community, leadership, and/or service experiences. Please list any skills or experiences you have that you feel is relevant to and prepares you for an Alternative Break trip. Note: No previous experience is necessary to apply. 3.) What qualities do you possess that help contribute to being a positive, collaborative team member? 4.) Describe your experience in working with people from different backgrounds than your own. Tell us about a time when you were faced with diverse opinions and perspectives. How did you respond to these differences? 5.) In a bulleted list, please include current or past employment positions, organization membership, and other co-curricular activities in which you’ve participated at Oregon State University, other colleges, or high school. 6.) How did you learn about the Alternative Break program? REFERENCES: At the end of your personal statements, please include at least two professional references that can speak your leadership and teamwork experience in additional to your character. Please include name, position/title, organization, phone number, email address, and relation to you.

Which trips are you interested in applying for? You may apply for one, two, or all three trips. Please select all that apply. Applicants applying for multiple trips have a higher likelihood of selection.
Please rate preference and level of interest for each trip you're applying for. For each trip, you're applying for, please list the destination, your rank order between 1 and 3 (1=most interested, 3=least interested), level of interest between 1 and 5 (1=low, 5=high) and a brief explanation for your rank order and level of interest. The selection committee will be considering level of past related experience, personal statements and motivations, and diversity in applications in making trip placement determinations.

I understand that Oregon State University reserves the right to require the withdrawal of any student on account of unsatisfactory behavior.
