OMN offers several trainings to help you hone your storytelling skills and navigate journalism and the media industry. All OMN trainings are free and open to all students. Advance registration is required for most trainings. Registration links are listed below within the workshop descriptions.

All OMN members are required to complete the Intro to Media Workshop before taking on any assignments. OMN members must complete the Field Equipment Certification Workshops before checking out equipment. Click here to review the checkout policy and view the available equipment.

Join us for the launch of the new issue of Beaver’s Digest, OSU’s lifestyle magazine. We always have a variety of fun activities, snacks, and sometimes raffles too! Don’t miss this fun, free event.

Beaver’s Digest is a student-run magazine dedicated to showcasing the student lifestyle and experience at OSU. BD shares information on the artistic scene around campus, highlights key student figures, and shares sports and Greek life stories. Orange Media Network (OMN) welcomes you and your family to OSU’s 2019 Spring Family Weekend. Come to the fourth floor of the SEC (Student Experience Center) for a tour of our facilities and join in some fun activities, including a photo shoot with our fashion team, talk to our DJs on air, learn how our TV crew sets up for a live show and much more. 

OMN is the university’s student run media organization and home to The Baro (newspaper), DAMchic (fashion magazine), Beaver’s Digest (lifestyle magazine), Prism (art and literary journal), KBVR-TV (TV stations where we have 24/7 programming on channel 26) and KBVR-FM (radio station).

Calling all art lovers! Come to the Prism Journal launch party to meet this issue’s artists, view their work, and have them sign your copy of the newest journal! We'll have snacks, fun activities and more in addition to the opportunity to meet the artists. 

Prism Journal is OSU’s quarterly art and literary journal welcomes submissions from all OSU students in the form of photography, illustrations, poetry, and more. The printed journal is produced by students and prints three issues per year, available for free on racks around campus. In this course, you will learn about the power of free speech and how to use media to create works that matters to your audience, keep them engaged, challenge their thinking and change the world.  Whether you are writing, shooting video, or hosting a radio show, this workshop will help you enhance your skills. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. All members of OMN are required to take this workshop before taking on any assignments for any OMN medium or publication.

Welcome back, KBVR-FMDJs! This is the required meeting for all returning student DJs at KBVR-FM. Radio staff will discuss important information, including expectations for DJs, upcoming events, and tips for improving your show. DJs will also select their time slots for the term. Have you ever wanted to learn how to become a successful radio DJ? Here’s your chance to learn and become a KBVR-FM DJ! This training is free and open to all OSU students. Sign up by emailing fm.manager@oregonstate.edu. This orientation covers federal rules about the radio station, gives an overview of the DJ booth, and sets the training schedule for the term. Attendance is mandatory for the duration of the orientation.

TV Studio Training

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! For beginners, this workshop will allow you to learn multiple pieces of TV studio equipment, including cameras, lights, microphones, audio board, and switcher. For veterans, you will go through our Director Track and learn how to take command of an entire broadcast. Use the skills you learn in this workshop to produce and direct your own videos or join the KBVR-TV team! For KBVR-TV, this is the perfect way to be trained on several pieces of equipment right at the start of the term, so you're ready to start. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! The floor director is the eyes and ears in the studio. They must organize the crew, keep guests informed, give cues, and keep things running smoothly. This workshop will teach you about command presence in a broadcast studio. Every TV show needs dynamic camera shots. Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! The Grass Valley Studio Cameras let you shoot your broadcast in HD. This workshop will teach you how to create engaging, dynamic shots that tell the story for your audience. You will learn proper safety, framing, and camera operation. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Every show needs strong lighting, and this workshop will teach you how to set up lights from the ceiling grid and using floor stands, as well as control it from our Element Light Board. If you’re a student interested in learning DSLR camera skills to take your photography and videography skills to the next level, this training is for you! In this training, you will learn the basics of how to work and utilize DSLR cameras to shoot photos and videos in the field. We will cover exposure, focus, shutter and other basic to begin shooting. Cameras will be provided. Use this knowledge to create media stories, art pieces, social media posts, and more! This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. This session is required for field equipment certification. If you’re a student interested in learning to use a Sony NX5 camera to take your videography skills to the next level, this training is for you! In this training, you will learn the basics of how to work and utilize Sony NX5 video cameras to shoot video while on assignment. These cameras are used in professional newsrooms and provide an all-in-one approach to videography. Use this knowledge to create media stories, art pieces, social media posts, and more! This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. This session is required for field equipment certification. Join OMN to learn how to create your own professional quality videos! Use the skills you’ll learn in this workshop to create art pieces, class projects, or just have fun. This workshop covers the basics of video editing on Adobe Premiere, including how to import video, make selections, cuts, trims, audio adjustments, create sequences, and exporting. For anyone who wants to be a visual storyteller, this is essential!
