OMN offers several trainings to help you hone your storytelling skills and navigate journalism and the media industry. All OMN trainings are free and open to all students. Advance registration is required for most trainings. Registration links are listed below within the workshop descriptions.

All OMN members are required to complete the Intro to Media Workshop before taking on any assignments. OMN members must complete the Field Equipment Certification Workshops before checking out equipment. Click here to review the checkout policy and view the available equipment.

All trainings will be in SEC 402

Whether you want to write news stories, spin records, draw cartoons or photograph fashion layouts, when you're with OMN, you're practicing journalism. This required workshop will introduce you to the tools you need to do so ethically, in ways that engage your audience, and with a better understanding of how to get more fully involved with student media production. 

This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. All members of OMN are required to take this workshop before taking on any assignments for any OMN medium or publication.

KBVR-FM Trainings and Events

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2019
5 pm — 7 pm | SEC 421, Studio A

Welcome back, KBVR-FM DJs! This is the required meeting for all returning student DJs at KBVR-FM. Radio staff will discuss important information, including expectations for DJs, upcoming events, and tips for improving your show. DJs will also select their time slots for the term. For students interested in becoming new DJs, check out OMN's New DJ Orientation!

Have you ever wanted to learn how to become a successful radio DJ? Here’s your chance to learn and become a KBVR-FM DJ! This training is free and open to all OSU students. Sign up by emailing fm.manager@oregonstate.edu. This orientation covers federal rules about the radio station, gives an overview of the DJ booth, and sets the training schedule for the term. Attendance is mandatory for the duration of the orientation.

Have you ever wanted to start your own podcast? We'll show you how! This workshop covers the easy steps you can take both at home and at OMN to star a new podcast, including recording tips and advice on building an audience. This session is free and open to all OSU students.

TV Studio Training

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! The Tria system allows users to cue up and play videos during a live broadcast. Learn how to use this amazing piece of equipment with us. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! The jib camera sits on a crane, and allows you to create dynamic, swooping shots in your production. Come learn how to use one of the most unique pieces of studio equipment at OMN. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Every TV show needs dynamic camera shots. Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! The Grass Valley Studio Cameras let you shoot your broadcast in HD. This workshop will teach you how to create engaging, dynamic shots that tell the story for your audience. You will learn proper safety, framing, and camera operation. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! TV still needs to sound good. This workshop will introduce you to the different type of microphones used in live TV and teach you how to set up and microphone and control it from our Wheatstone Dimension 3 audio board. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! Every show needs strong lighting, and this workshop will teach you how to set up lights from the ceiling grid and using floor stands, as well as control it from our Element Light Board. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! This workshop will get you hands-on with our switcher board to learn how to control a live TV broadcast. You will learn how to access different video sources and choose what viewers see on TV. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

Join OMN to learn the behind-the-scenes magic of TV studios in this great workshop series! Don't end up like Ron Burgandy! This workshop will show you how to use a teleprompter, including how to enter scripts, control the speed, and read like a news anchor. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.

If you’re a student interested in learning DSLR camera skills to take your photography and videography skills to the next level, this training is for you! In this training, you will learn the basics of how to work and utilize DSLR cameras to shoot photos and videos in the field. We will cover exposure, focus, shutter and other basic to begin shooting. Cameras will be provided. Use this knowledge to create media stories, art pieces, social media posts, and more! This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. This session is required for field equipment certification. All OMN student employees and student volunteers working for OMN must take this training before any field equipment can be checked out.

Friday, Oct. 4, 2019

If you’re a student interested in learning to use a Sony NX5 camera to take your videography skills to the next level, this training is for you! In this training, you will learn the basics of how to work and utilize Sony NX5 video cameras to shoot video while on assignment. These cameras are used in professional newsrooms and provide an all-in-one approach to videography. Use this knowledge to create media stories, art pieces, social media posts, and more! This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. This session is required for field equipment certification. All OMN student employees and student volunteers working for OMN must take this training before any field equipment can be checked out.

If you’re a student interested in taking your photography and videography skills to the next level, this training is for you! In this training, you will learn the basics of how to work and utilize professional field microphones to capture audio in the field and light kits to illuminate your subjects. Use this knowledge to create media stories, art pieces, social media posts, and more! This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate. This session is required for field equipment certification. All OMN student employees and student volunteers working for OMN must take this training before any field equipment can be checked out.

Join OMN to learn how to create your own professional quality videos! Use the skills you’ll learn in this workshop to create art pieces, class projects, or just have fun. This workshop covers the basics of video editing on Adobe Premiere, including how to import video, make selections, cuts, trims, audio adjustments, create sequences, and exporting. For anyone who wants to be a visual storyteller, this is essential! This training is perfect for people new to video or those who want a refresher. This session is free and open to all OSU students, but registration is required to participate.
