The OMN copy editor works in collaboration with the editors of all OMN publications to proofread and edit all written content for print and online.

The copy editor ensures student staff members and volunteers are held to the highest ethical and professional standards and practices. The copy editor builds others up through mentoring, coaching and supporting.

The copy editor follows OMN policies and procedures while advancing Orange Media Network’s reputation for excellence as a welcoming, engaging and inclusive organization.

Qualifications:

  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Is knowledgeable in fact checking strategies
  • Is knowledgeable in Associated Press (AP) Style
  • Is knowledgeable of the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Is knowledgable of or willing to learn InDesign
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is experienced with giving and receiving feedback
  • Is capable of leading and coaching others to be their best
  • Able to work flexible hours including weekends
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with sources, stakeholders, partners, collaborators and the community
  • Meets university eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Must be currently enrolled at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Must remain in a good academic standing from the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
  • Must complete all elements of Spring On-Boarding Curriculum

 

Expectations:

  • Participation
    • Must attend and fully participate in OMN Boot Camp (Sept. 5-7, 2018; Sep. 10-12, 2018) and be available to work (Sep. 13-19, 2018) before school starts.
    • Must participate in Welcome Week activities (Sept. 21-23, 2018)
    • Hold and post regular office hours each week at Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday).
    • Assist in planning and running Boot Camp training for copy editors
    • Fully participate in weekly cohort meeting with adviser to train, review the week’s strengths and areas for improvement, and most importantly, brainstorm

    • Notify adviser and the Director of OMN immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur
    • Alert professional staff immediately on issues with equipment, and proactively collaborate with adviser on anticipating and resolving issues with student staff, volunteers, readers, sources and others
    • Respond to emails and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN

Responsibilities:

  • Editing Content
    • Proofreads, copy edits and fact checks written work intended for print and/or online publication by Orange Media Network, including The Daily Barometer, Beaver’s Digest, Prism, DAMchic, blogs, Orangemedianetwork.com, marketing and/or social media posts
    •  Checks all written work for grammar, punctuation, spelling and Associated Press (AP) style
    • Works in the OMN newsroom on Sundays to edit and fact check print publication
    • Ensure all content strives to be representative of the myriad of experiences and identities of the OSU community through source selection, guest selection, topic selection, and image selection
    • Ensure all content in print and online is fair, accurate and complete prior to publication. Review contributors’ notes and make necessary accuracy checking phone calls before publication
    • Attend weekly red mark meetings with adviser to review and evaluate print publication of The Daily Barometer
  • Management
    • Ensure you and your staff are using, checking and responding to BaseCamp for project management
    • Ensure staff have completed all required training
    • Set high standards and hold staff to those expectations and in accordance to OMN policies and procedures
    • Work collaboratively with other mediums to create a welcoming and inter-disciplinary environment
    • Ensure that all students are given opportunities to grow and try new roles, positions and leadership opportunities. Collaborate with adviser on new ways for staff to advance in their skills
    • Other duties as assigned by the adviser, Director and editor-in-chief
  • Collaboration
    • Be a collaborator with fellow OMN leaders in the shared use of facilities, equipment and content to benefit all OMN publications, mediums and audience

 

Pay Rate: Averages approximately 10 hours per week, $460 per month
