Orange Media Network (OMN) Summer Baro Editor-in-Chief 2019


The Summer Baro Editor-in-Chief 2019 is responsible for all student news operations at OMN including daily student-produced content for the website, social media platforms and news broadcasts and monthly print editions from June 15 to Aug. 15, 2019.


The editor ensures student staff members are held to the highest ethical and professional standards and practices. The editor assigns tasks, oversees all activities of the OMN news team and delegates when appropriate. The editor works with their OMN adviser and director to plan for the future while showcasing student work in a fair and unbiased fashion. As a leader, the editor builds others up through mentoring, coaching and supporting, while also managing and directing work.


The editor follows OMN policies and procedures to recruit, lead and supervise student staff while advancing OMN's reputation for excellence as a welcoming, engaging and inclusive organization. As a student leader within OMN, the editor of The Baro sets the tone of the department as a collaborative, supportive and celebrative environment.


The editor should be familiar with all aspects of the publication and OMN. They should identify and facilitate trainings and workshops for all staff members including, but not limited to, reporting, writing, layout, Google tools, ethics and fact-checking. The editor acts as a liaison of the newspaper and OMN and may be called upon to serve on committees and represent OMN publicly.


The Summer Baro Editor-in-Chief 2019 position starts June 1, 2019, and ends Sep. 15, 2019.

  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 3 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 6 months
  • Meets university eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Must be currently enrolled at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Must remain in a good academic standing from the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
  • Must complete all elements of Spring On-Boarding Curriculum by May 31, 2019


Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Had been a paid member of staff for at least 6 months



  • Participation
    • Must read the book Crucial Conversations (provided) by July 5, 2019, and be ready to discuss in Leader’s meeting in July 2019
    • Ensure Baro fully participates in all OMN events, including but not limited to all OMN START tours and activities
    • Meet regularly with OMN adviser to go over feedback and areas for improvement; anticipate and strategize for overcoming challenges
    • Fully participate in weekly OMN Student Leadership meetings with the Director
    • Attendance must be reliable and punctual
    • Ensure that you and your staff complete all OMN surveys, including but not limited to the Weekly and Term Assessments
    • Hold and post 10 regular office hours each week at Orange Media Network and these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday - Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term

    • Notify adviser and the Director of OMN immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur
    • Alert professional staff immediately on issues with equipment, and proactively collaborate with adviser on anticipating and resolving issues with student staff, productions, participants, guest and viewer issues
    • Respond to emails, pings and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Summer Baro Editor-in-Chief 2019 Expectations
    • Meet regularly with adviser and Barometer staff to review the week’s redmark and train on journalism topics
    • Stay up to date on current trends and technology in college news reporting



  • Content Creation
    • Help create or provide content for the OMN page in the Gazette-Times, coordinating with the Barometer Editor and professional staff on dates and deadlines
    • Contribute content for other OMN publications and collaborate with other student leaders on multimedia projects, including videos, podcasts, and online interactive features
    • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
    • Ensure all content strives to be representative of the myriad of experiences and identities of the OSU community through source selection, guest selection, topic selection, and image selection
  • Hiring and payroll
    • Hire staff in consultation with adviser. Disciplinary action must be approved by adviser, based on University Human Resources guidelines and following OMN’s 3-strike process
    • Follow hiring process and immediately report all new hires to the Assistant to the Director for Operations Support so that they can complete payroll forms and obtain card access
    • If applicable, ensure that all volunteers have completed the volunteer agreement form, are eligible and consistently meet expectations
    • Work with advisers to ensure cohort payroll is on time and accurate
  • Management
    • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the Baro staff and establish procedures that encourage learning, student participation, accountability and media excellence
    • Work with adviser to maintain and create documentation for OMN programs, including training material, handbooks, manuals, production planning, and staff lists
    • Ensure you and your staff are using, checking and responding to BaseCamp for project management
    • Collaborate with adviser to ensure Baro staff are properly trained on journalism skills, ethics, and professionalism
    • Ensure staff have completed all required training
    • Manage Baro staff workload
    • Set high standards and hold staff to those expectations and in accordance to OMN policies and procedures
    • Work collaboratively with other mediums to create a welcoming and inter-disciplinary environment
    • Work collaboratively with other mediums when creating content or providing coverage to ensure that the best medium is used
    • Ensure that all students are given opportunities to grow and try new roles, positions and leadership opportunities. Collaborate with adviser on new ways for staff to advance in their skills

  • Summer Baro Editor-in-Chief 2019 Responsibilities
    • Establish a sense of urgency in the news operation and create a breaking news culture to ensure OMN content is timely and relevant
    • Lead news coverage for all OMN platforms, oversee production of print edition, update and oversee, direct video news coverage for news broadcasts, oversee content for all OMN blogs, social media and online platforms.
    • Monitor news competitors at the local, state and national level
    • Update Barometer website daily with fresh stories, photos, videos, graphics and other content to ensure coverage is unique, engaging and enhances stories with multimedia tools
    • Hold weekly meetings with the OMN News Team to discuss coverage plans
    • Hold weekly OMN news team all-staff meetings to assign stories and provide training
    • Oversee additional activities of the news staff
    • Ensure each all-staff incorporates training related to red mark meetings, topical issues, etc.
    • Participate in all print production work
    • With team, oversee and create monthly, weekly and daily production schedule
    • Make sure print edition is sent to printers before deadline and that all print-edition content is posted online before 6 a.m. the day the newspaper is on newsracks
    • Hold content budget meetings with editors to discuss the day’s and week’s content and plans for rest of week
  • Collaboration
    • Collaborate with the other student leaders to, at a minimum, review audience engagement in print and online on a weekly basis, and ensure that content is engaging and interesting. Actively work to improve the quality and engagement of the OMN's content.
    • Work with OMN Marketing team to develop and implement marketing strategies for newspaper engagement, distribution and promotion.
    • Be a collaborator with fellow OMN leaders in the shared use of facilities, equipment and content to benefit all OMN publications, mediums and audience
  • Delegation to staff:
    • Typically delegated to editors and news producers, ensure all content in print, web, social media, or other platforms is accurate, fair and complete prior to publication. Review reporters' notes and make accuracy-check phone calls/emails to sources before publication with enough advance notice to allow sources reasonable time to respond (1-2 days when feasible).
    • Typically delegated to the News Chief or another editor, update Barometer social media multiple times every day (Facebook, Twitter, other accounts as they become useful and relevant).  Ensure social media content is engaging and goes beyond posting links; use the accounts to post multimedia content, Facebook Live and Periscope video, and interact with readers.
    • Typically delegated to the News Editor, prioritze investigative, in-depth news that utilizes the space and format in the print edition.
    • Typically delegated to the News Chief, ensure news broadcasts are created with 3-5 stories per week. Make sure all news broadcast content is created with edited video, full anchor script, and a fully written version for online. News broadcasts should be uploaded to YouTube with captions each day. As breaking news happens, use additional news broadcast to ensure a story is covered fully.


Pay Rate: 10 hours per week, $520 per month
