Orange Media Network (OMN) Summer Beaver's Digest Editor-in-Chief 2019


The Summer Beaver's Digest Editor-in-Chief 2019 is responsible for student-produced content for the website, digital newsletter and all social media platforms.


The editor follows OMN policies and procedures to lead while advancing OMN's reputation for excellence as a welcoming, engaging and inclusive organization. As a student leader within OMN, the editor of Beaver's Digest sets the tone of the department as a collaborative, supportive and celebrative environment.


The editor should be familiar with all aspects of the publication and OMN and identify and facilitate trainings and workshops including but not limited to, reporting, writing, layout and design, Google tools, ethics, and fact checking.  The editor acts as a liaison of the publication and OMN and may be called upon to serve on committees and represent OMN publicly.


The Summer Beaver's Digest Editor-in-Chief 2019 position starts June 1, 2019, and ends Sept. 15, 2019.



  • Can identify news values and trend stories of interest to the OSU student body
  • Can think outside of the box in terms of new mediums and lifestyle topics
  • Working knowledge of AP style
  • Familiar with the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Able to create content for online platforms
  • Knowledgeable in newsgathering and fact-checking strategies
  • Familiar with magazine practices
  • Able to use or willing to learn how to use DSLR camera and basics of studio photography and video
  • Capable of effectively using TownNews, video, Google tools and social media analytics for building audience engagement
  • Has a strong social media presence and recognizes the role of social media in newsgathering and sharing
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is experienced with giving and receiving feedback
  • Is capable of leading and coaching others to be their best
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with sources, stakeholders, partners, collaborators and the community
  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 3 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 6 months
  • Meets university eligibility requirements, including but not limited to:
    • Must be currently enrolled at Oregon State University for at least 6 academic credits
    • Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5
    • Must remain in a good academic standing from the term prior to selection and during the entire period of employment
  • Must complete all elements of Spring On-Boarding Curriculum by May 31, 2019


Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Had been a paid member of staff for at least 6 months



  • Participation
    • Must read the book Crucial Conversations (provided) by July 5, 2019, and be ready to discuss in Leader’s meeting in July 2019
    • Ensure Beaver's Digest fully participates in all OMN events, including but not limited to all OMN START tours and activities
    • Meet regularly with OMN adviser to go over feedback and areas for improvement; anticipate and strategize for overcoming challenges
    • Fully participate in weekly OMN Student Leadership meetings with the Director
    • Attendance must be reliable and punctual
    • Ensure that you and your staff complete all OMN surveys, including but not limited to the Weekly and Term Assessments
    • Hold and post 10 regular office hours each week at Orange Media Network and these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday - Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term
  • Conduct

  • Leadership
    • Be an approachable leader within the OMN organization, capable of seeing things from the 5,000-foot level and representing the entire organization as needed
    • Hold staff accountable to their position descriptions and expectations, and publicly acknowledge and celebrate accomplishment and growth at all levels of the organization
    • Schedule, create an agenda and hold weekly cohort meetings before 5 p.m. with Beaver's Digest staff and adviser to train, review the week’s strengths and areas for improvement, and most importantly, brainstorm, plan and execute activities for the upcoming week, month and term
    • Work to create an inclusive culture of celebration and perseverance

  • Engagement
    • Consider audience needs in all content and production
    • Grow audience engagement in accordance with goals set during Onboarding and in collaboration with marketing and other mediums
  • Communication
    • Notify adviser and the Director of OMN immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur
    • Alert professional staff immediately on issues with equipment, and proactively collaborate with adviser on anticipating and resolving issues with student staff, productions, participants, guest and viewer issues
    • Respond to emails, pings and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Summer Beaver's Digest Editor-in-Chief 2019 Expectations
    • Meet regularly with adviser to review red marked materials and train on journalism topics
    • Stay up to date on news trends and technology in college news reporting



  • Content Creation
    • Help create or provide content for the OMN page in the Gazette-Times, coordinating with the Barometer Editor and professional staff on dates and deadlines
    • Contribute content for other OMN publications and collaborate with other student leaders on multimedia projects, including videos, podcasts, and online interactive features
    • Work to ensure that OMN program content is current, relevant, and consistent with OMN’s mission, vision, and policies
    • Ensure all content strives to be representative of the myriad of experiences and identities of the OSU community through source selection, guest selection, topic selection, and image selection
  • Hiring and payroll
    • Hire staff in consultation with adviser. Disciplinary action must be approved by adviser, based on University Human Resources guidelines and following OMN’s 3-strike process
    • Follow hiring process and immediately report all new hires to the Assistant to the Director for Operations Support so that they can complete payroll forms and obtain card access
    • If applicable, ensure that all volunteers have completed the volunteer agreement form, are eligible and consistently meet expectations
    • Work with advisers to ensure cohort payroll is on time and accurate
  • Management
    • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to the Beaver's Digest staff and establish procedures that encourage learning, student participation, accountability and media excellence
    • Work with adviser to maintain and create documentation for OMN programs, including training material, handbooks, manuals, production planning, and staff lists
    • Ensure you and your staff are using, checking and responding to BaseCamp for project management
    • Collaborate with adviser to ensure Beaver's Digest staff are properly trained on journalism skills, ethics, magazine production and professionalism
    • Ensure staff have completed all required training
    • Manage Beaver's Digest staff workload
    • Set high standards and hold staff to those expectations and in accordance to OMN policies and procedures
    • Work collaboratively with other mediums to create a welcoming and inter-disciplinary environment
    • Work collaboratively with other mediums when creating content or providing coverage to ensure that the best medium is used
    • Ensure that all students are given opportunities to grow and try new roles, positions and leadership opportunities. Collaborate with adviser on new ways for staff to advance in their skills

  • Summer Beaver's Digest Editor-in-Chief 2019 Responsibilities
    • Update Beaver's Digest website at least five days a week with fresh stories, photos, videos and other multimedia content.
    • Ensure online content is unique, engaging and enhances stories with multimedia tools
    • Ensure that all students who submit articles, photos, podcasts and video receive coaching and feedback prior to publication, so they can learn and improve.
    • Participate in all content production work.
    • Meet regularly with newsmakers, sources and campus leaders to build relationships and develop stories.
    • Ensure that all articles have been copyedited and that all names, places, etc. are correct before publication.
    • Work closely with photo staff to best illustrate content.
  • Collaboration
    • Collaborate with the other student leaders to, at a minimum, review audience engagement online on a weekly basis, and ensure that content is engaging and interesting. Actively work to improve the quality and engagement of the Beaver’s Digest content.
    • Collaborate with OMN Marketing team to organize public outreach events.
    • Work with OMN Marketing team to develop and implement marketing strategies for  engagement and promotion.
    • Be a collaborator with fellow OMN leaders in the shared use of facilities, equipment and content to benefit all OMN publications, mediums and audience
